Rules of Prey - John Sandford

I finished this book in one day - it was that good!! Rules of Prey is the first book in the Lucas Davenport series. And it won't be the last one that I read. In fact, I have the second book reserved at the library.

Lucas Davenport is a police detective that invents video games on the side. He is called in to help stop a serial killer who is playing a "game" with the police. Even though we get to know who the killer is at the beginning of the book, the story kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how Lucas was going to capture the guy. Sandford switches back and forth from the mind of the serial killer to Lucas's attempts at tracking him down. It involves police procedures, dealing with the press, and the intricacies of putting together a profile of a serial killer.

The book captivated me from the beginning and I just couldn't put it down. I love the characters. They are believable and very real. As I read reviews of the next couple of books, it seems like the series just keeps getting better.

Rating: 4/5
Pages: 368
Completed: 7/8/08

It's sort of sad to say this...considering how much I love this genre, but I have never read a book by this author...lol!

Ahhh! You make me want to read the next one NOW! I read this last year (I think) and like you was very taken by it. I remember wanting to slap the main character though. :)

Joy ~ I've read the whole series and I'm listening to Phantom Prey right now (the newest book), and that feeling of wanting to slap Davenport never goes goes away through the entire series. Good thing the stories are so good! :-)

j. kaye - you gotta try him!!
Although I agree with Joy and Lezlie - you just want to smack Davenport, the main character. But the mystery and suspense was really good.
