It is time to celebrate another author for the month of March. She writes under three names - Jayne Ann Krentz (contemporary romantic-suspense), Amanda Quick (historical romantic-suspense), and Jayne Castle (futuristic/paranormal romantic-suspense). Her biography can be read here.
To celebrate her birthday (March 28) I read White Lies the second book in the Arcane Society series. Clare Lancaster is a level-ten parasensitive - friends call her a human lie detector. She has come to accept that someone like her is unlikely to find a suitable mate. Everyone lies. When she discovers the body of her brother-in-law, the residents of Stone Canyon turn a suspicious eye in her direction.
Jake Salter, her father's business consultant, walks a line between truth and deception. However, something sparks between them, more than the usual between a man and a woman. Jake and Clare start to investigate the death and it demands every bit of their special gifts. They are caught in a storm of secrets, lies, and half-truths.
I really enjoyed this book. I had read the first book in the series a few months back - but this can absolutely be read as a stand-alone. Jayne Ann Krentz pens a story with the right amount of mystery, intrigue, sexual tension, and explanations into parasensitive information without going overboard. It was definitely a great read and I can't wait to get the next one in the series, Sizzle and Burn.
