I am somewhat ashamed to admit this, but...
I just finished my first classic - I know, quite shameful, but it is true. I read some classics in college, but they were abridged versions and we didn't read the entire stories. Soooo, my first classic is done, and I am quite pleased with myself.
I read Dracula, by Bram Stoker and absolutely loved it. It was extremely frightening in the beginning with Harker being at the castle and had me biting my nails. The intensity did fade a bit by the end of the story. I don't know, I think I envisioned a more terrifying ending. However, overall I enjoyed the book.
Maybe I am desensitized somewhat because of all the other horror stories that are out now. But, I could only imagine the horror that his book brought when it was first introduced!! I liked how the story was written in several different points of view. When you read the story, it is written like a diary - but diaries of many different characters in the book. All with their own opinions and with their own take on the situation. It is a journey of every character's involvement with Count Dracula and the horrors he inflicted on their lives.
I have read many horror stories over the years, and it has been quite fun to see how the vampire has evolved from Stoker's depiction of him to today's depiction of him. Quite interesting how some things haven't changed either, holding the test of time.
I finally get to cross one off on my Decades Challenge - which is challenging me to read more classics!! And hey...I just realized it is also on the 1001 Books To Read Before You Die list...wow, only 1000 more to go...

Yay you! I have recently started incorporating classics into my reading as well. It's such a feeling of accomplishment to finish one. Good for you!
I know what you mean about accomplishment! I got this one online and plan to go back and get some others at The Literature Network.
I recently read this one also, and it is interesting to think of the difference between now and then when it comes to horror! It was also a lot easier of a read than I thought it would be. I reviewed it on my blog if you want to check it out and compare notes! http://sazchainreader.blogspot.com
I really, really wish I could, but I can't read classics. I don't know why. But if I try, my brain feels like it will explode...bummer...total bummer.
I read this last October and really enjoyed it. I loved the old-fashioned gothic flavor. It was my first vampire book ever. Now I've read several.
Dracula was my first audio book. I had never read it! I really enjoyed it too. I had/have a broken foot and couldn't focus on a page with the pain meds so the audio was excellent. The story kept me hooked. It was more than I expected!
